Clint Bowyer Kansas Race Summary

No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota driver Clint Bowyer started eighth and finished 36th in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver raced into the top five immediately following the green flag. Bowyer, a native of Emporia, Kan., made a green-flag pit stop on lap 43 while racing in fifth. Once he returned to the racetrack, Bowyer notified the crew of a possible engine issue. The No. 15 Toyota spun coming to pit road on lap 52 and immediately went to the garage for repairs. Bowyer lost 13 laps while in the garage before returning to the racetrack in 38th position. Bowyer gained two positions before additional mechanical issues forced him to retire from the race on lap 139. The 5-hour ENERGY team returns to action Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway.

  • Started eighth and finished 36th. Now 11th in points.
  • Raced in the fifth position from the green flag until the first pit stop on lap 43.
  •  Radioed the crew that he lost a cylinder following the pit stop.
  • Spun trying to get to pit road on lap 52 to bring out the first caution.
  • Spent 13 laps in the garage before returning to the track in 38th position.
  • Retired from the race on lap 139 due to terminal engine damage.

Bowyer Quotes:

What happened to bring you into the garage?
“It just wasn’t our day.  Just one of those days in motorsports.  The guys do such a good job back at the shop to give me a car that’s capable of winning and in the engine shop.  This is just the nature of the beast.  I don’t know what broke -- I just wish it hadn’t of happened here.  Anywhere but here.”

Are you frustrated to have your day end early at your hometown track?
“It was just a major bummer.  I’m really upset -- I just wish it wouldn’t have happened here.  This is the nature of the beast.  Unfortunately this happens from time to time.  These guys do such a good job with the engine program.  They were bringing a good car, you know we were running up front, I think we were a couple adjustments away from at least being part of the game here today.  Unfortunately it just wasn’t our day.  We’ll regroup and go back after it in Richmond.”
