Bristol Race Report

Clint Bowyer Race Summary: No. 15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota Camry driver Clint Bowyer finished 14th in Saturday Night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver started 24th and raced to the lead by lap 125 where he stayed until lap 175 when he was spun by a lap car. The No. 15 team came to pit road multiple times for repairs and maintained their lead-lap position. Crew chief Brian Pattie used pit strategy to regain track position and move back into the top five by lap 350. Bowyer continued working his way through the field and restarted second with 50 laps remaining. The 5-hour ENERGY Toyota was on its way to a top-five finish before running out of fuel on the last lap. Bowyer and the No. 15 team became one of only three teams to clinch a Chase for the Sprint Cup berth at Bristol Motor Speedway. The team remains second in points trailing Jimmie Johnson by 18 points with two races remaining before the start of the Chase. The No.15 returns to action Sunday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

  • Started 24th finished 14th
  • Led laps 126 to 175
  • On lap 175 Bowyer was spun by a lap car while leading
  • Raced back into the top-10 by lap 335 and restarted second with 50 laps to go
  • Remains second in points trailing Johnson by 18
  • Clinched his second consecutive Chase for the Sprint Cup berth since joining MWR

BOWYER: “Man, our car was so fast. I felt like we had a shot at winning and then I got spun out there by a lapper of all things.  When I got hit up there, it hit that left-front tire and the car never turned the center as good the rest of the night.  Extremely proud of the guys -- they got it fixed back up.  We went out there and gave it everything we had and just came up short.  Then we ran out of gas there at the end.”

What does it mean to be locked in the Chase? “It means a lot, but just really disappointed tonight because we had a really good car. Absolutely nothing really went our way all night.”
